Mexico City Holds Off Iowa, 122-117

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Mexico City Capitanes held off the Iowa Wolves, 122-117, on Sunday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena in front of 5,291 fans.

Mexico City (15-14) completed the series sweep with Sunday’s win in a tightly contested game that featured 13 lead changes and 10 ties. The Capitanes’ largest lead was 10 while Iowa (6-24)

held its final and largest lead of four at the 4:16 mark of the third quarter. 

Mexico City closed the third on a 10-0 run that ended up being the deciding run. However, Iowa battled back to within two points twice with less than 25 seconds remaining in the game but couldn’t pull even with missed threes and Capitanes’ free throws.

Javonte Cooke led all scorers with 27 points as all five Iowa starters finished with 15 or more points. Trevor Keels, Daishen Nix and Tyrese Martin all scored 18 each while Giorgi Bezhanishvili had 15. Martin pulled down 12 rebounds and handed out four assists. Cooke had eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Off the bench, Lance Stephenson scored 10 points and handed out seven assists.

Louis King paced Mexico City with 26 points to go with eight rebounds and six assists. Ethan Thompson finished with 24 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Mexico City got a big boost from its bench as Luke Martinez and Maozinha Pereira each scored 16. The Capitanes’ reserves had 47 points to 21 by Iowa’s. 

Iowa visits the Osceola Magic on March 25 and 27 for its final road games of the season. Both games start at 6 p.m. CT. The Wolves finish the season at home on March 29 and 30 when the Austin Spurs visit Wells Fargo Arena.
