Two Iowa Energy Players Invited to NBA D-League Elite Mini Camp
Matt Costello and JaKarr Sampson to participate in camp held on May 8-9 in Chicago
Des Moines, Iowa – The NBA Development League announced on Tuesday that two Iowa Energy players were invited to participate in the eighth annual Elite Mini Camp, a two-day scouting event featuring 40 of the league’s top prospects.
Matt Costello and JaKarr Sampson were invited to the D-League camp, which will be held at the Quest Multisport gym in Chicago on May 8-9.
The camp highlights standout players from the past season, giving them a chance to perform in front of NBA team personnel in advance of Summer Leagues and 2017 training camps.
Costello (6-9, 245) was one of six D-League players this season to average 10-plus rebounds per game, minimum 20 games played. The rookie out of Michigan St. averaged a double-double for most of the season, finishing just shy of the mark with 9.5 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.
On April 1, Costello broke the Iowa Energy’s single-game rebounding record, hauling in 25 boards to break the previous mark of 24 rebounds set in 2010.
Sampson (6-9, 207) appeared in 47 games this season for the Energy, finishing third on the team in scoring with 15.1 points while averaging 5.9 rebounds per contest. Sampson was the lone Energy player selected to the 2017 D-League All-Star Game before backing out due to injury.
A consistent contributor on the offensive end, Sampson scored in double-digits in all but seven games he appeared in (40-47). Sampson is one of six expected participants at this year’s NBA D-League camp to have NBA experience.
